This is an optional field. It is used to identify groups of
related data points with matching strings (e.g. IDs), which will allow you to
apply uniform Legend Colors and Legend Shapes settings to all data
points within a group and create items in the legend.
Legend field can be used without Categories field to plot data points, however it has limited capabilities – you can only add one column and thus create one hierarchy level (unlike Categories which can have multiple), and it is limited to 100 unique data points. It is recommended to use both fields.
- If Categories field has no data: Scatter PRO will plot each unique string in the Legend column as a data point. If multiple rows have matching strings in the column, their X-Axis and Y-Axis values will be aggregated and displayed as a single data point.
- If Categories field has valid data: Scatter PRO will plot data points and create a drill down hierarchy using the Categories field. The Legend field will identify groups of data points with matching strings, allowing you to apply color or shape customization and create legends independently from the category structure.

If neither Categories or Legend fields are present, the visual will not be able to separate data into data points and instead will display all values in an aggregated form.
